repairing a stolen vehicle
so i recently has my '94 chevy 1500 stolen from me, but i have since recovered it. there was no serious damage done to the truck, and its not worth a whole lot so i dont want to spend too much having a shop fix it.
there are pretty much 2 major things:
- driver side window bashed in. i know i can fix this myself, but im not sure where to get the glass. ive done a few quick google searches but most results are for 'safelite auto glass repair', and the like. any suggestions on where to get some glass?
- collar on the steering column is busted, and the linkage between the key and starter mechanism is torn out (to by pass the key). does anyone have any idea in whats involved with fixing this? does the whole steering column need to be replaced? i think im going to have to have a shop do this part for me, so any ideas on cost?
anybody have any experience with this? any input helps. thanks guys.Last edited by grouch0jr; 04-23-2011 at 02:46 PM.

Replacing the window shouldn't be that expensive, it would be like $125 in my area

Any junkyard should have a window. Craigslist is an option also. Probably cheaper to just replace the column yourself then to pay a shop to try and fix all the damaged parts.

Call around to junk yards in your area you should be able to get a window and a column cheap and if the jy column doesnt have keys you can get a new cylinder pretty cheap from places like LMC truck.

www.car-part.com I used that place all the time when I worked in a body shop. You should be able to find both parts on there. Try and find a QRP salvage yard as most of those places usually have the best service and best parts.

Isn't there a ton of u pull it junkyards in Pa. go to one of them take the whole steering column and the window. There may be other parts you find that are better than yours as well that you can pick up for a good price.

the window im not too worried about. i found an ebay vendor that sells them new for $50, then $20 for shipping. I dont mind paying that.
the main problem is that i have no idea how to replace a steering column. is it something i should be able to figure out?

The column has a pinch bolt down toward the firewall. Unbolt that and unplug a few harnesses and you should be good to go if you are planning to replace the column/wheel as a whole.
