    Really, who has thought of it???

    I like a lot of people plan on, or have switched rear end gears. I have a M6 and know the car loves 4:11's (I still have stock gears myself) But I am thinking outside the box, what about 2:73's in a M6. I know 6th would be worthless unless doing 110 mph but I could hit about 65 in 1st. Has anyone did this, thought about it, seen someone else do it. Chime in everyone please.

    does anyone have the ratios for 2.73 on hand. i need to see em to answer correctly but i cant find a layout.

    my gut tells me it would be slower even with the longer first gear. i think its better to have shorter final drive for increased acceleration. when you get past 120 whats the difference. i would get a gear that best suits the quarter mile, which in an m6's case is either 4.10, 4.11, or if youre really ballsy, 4.56!

    hope this thread develops, pretty good question!

    It would accelerate much slower.
    And top end wouldn't be any better. Pretty much aerodynamically limited at that kind of speed.

    1st = 65
    2nd = 97
    3rd = 133
    4th = 173
    5th = 234
    6th = 347

    Mr. Luos, do you know off hand what gears the new z06 has? i read it will do 60 in first but it has to be a short final right?

    Not off hand.
    But the tranny ratios are different as well.

    hmm. i wonder...you run 4.11s right? are they pretty much perfect for the strip with your set up? i want to go 4.10s, but i will have around 450 lb/ft when its all said and done....just wondering how much of a difference between the two and what you kind you recommend....

    also if you dont mind, how much did you buy that block for?

    Assembled shortblock was $3900 shipped to the house.
    I run 4.11's. They are great for me at my altitude. But I am starting to get close to running out of gear on a 26" tire here.
    I spin to 6700 on a 26" tire...meaning my top speed in 4th is 124MPH. And I won't shift into 5th at the strip.
    If I was running at sea level, I would need either 3.90's or 27/28 inch tires.

    thanks man. i believe you forgot to mention you and your family were coming down and staying in my basement so you could run youre car at Gateway.

    it would be nice to know what that beast can REALLY do. its like beating a dead horse but you have a nice car. do you have most all suspension pieces like panhart rod, lower ca's, double adjustable shocks, all that good stuff?

    i didnt know it was that critical to match tire size with gears like youre saying....i guess its back to the drawing board for me....

    Panhard rod (adj.), tunnel braced torque arm (adj.), LCA's, LCA brackets, SFC's, STB (worthless), BMR rear sway relocator kit, ProKit springs.
    Sadly...still on the stock struts/shocks.
    Seriously considering raising the car .5" with the Hotchkis springs.

    This is exactly what I wanted to see, people with brains thinking. I thought of all the possiblities, or so I thought. And I believe the Z06 and base model have 2:73's for 08. Could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

    I beleive the 2.73's are only on the 6 speed paddle shift. Its 1st gear is crazy though! I think its 4.03..... crazy low.

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

    2.73's would make a great touring car-imagine the gas milage!

    My thoughts exactly. I do 80% cruising and 20% racing so 2.73s would be more logical for me. But im still gunna get 4.11s anyway.

    4.11 in a stock 10bolt is a bomb waiting to happen. the ring and pinion for 4.11 are less material and easier to break.

    think about what kind of build you want and the type of driving you do. all the components in your car effect eachother in ex: you can match a cam size to the correct rearend size.

    As far as vettes hitting 60 in first gear. the reason being is the transmission ratio.

    If you want to hit 60 in first gear, build up your valvetrain and raise your rev limiter. Just make sure you still making power. Its pointless to be shifting hight if your engine fell off 1000rpms ago.

    My rev liter is now at 7300 and I shift at 6900rpm... hmmm first gear up to 60mph yep!
