I was thinking about this earlier today.
Over the weekend I went to two parties and a concert. The amount of people consumed by their phones was astounding. These days it seems like people are more concerned about letting everyone know about what they're doing, rather than what they actually are doing. It's as if, if they can't immediately show off to everyone on the numerous social networks, they're not enjoying themselves. Almost like they're living vicariously through their online profiles, excited not by their actual experiences, but the comments and "likes" from other people about their experiences.
brb "OMG HAVIN SO MUCH FUN @ THIS PARTAYY!!! <3" even though I'm standing in the corner with a blasé expression on my face as I type this into my phone
brb checking my phone every 3 minutes for facebook updates
brb having an utterly pointless text conversation just to look important and popular
brb this band is playing my favorite song but updating my status to tell everyone this band is playing my favorite song is more important than enjoying my favorite song
brb phone out of battery, 10 minutes away from home, drive 15 minutes away to buy car charger
brb taking photo's at a party, reviewing said photo, instantly screaming "OMG PROFILE PICCCCCCC!!!!" like really? You appear to be having fun at this party but a fuckin website is the most important thing on your mind? Real fuckin neato.
Yes mad. Society is turning into a cesspool of attention whores.
