    I'll argue that with you.

Dick Dale didn't start metal but he did start (or at least was there in the begining of what was to be called) Surf music, which I consider (maybe) a progenitor but not true metal.

Did you also notice that while he's left handed he doesn't reverse the strings?

True but the way he played surf music vs everyone else that played it was much heavier. the way he played everything I believe led up to modern hard rock ect.

No i did not Notice that he didn't reverse the strings, I was too busy enjoying the ride

WOw! That sounds pretty good. But I really dont think if he played the same song 30 years ago it sounded like that. Its been upgraded with new guitar techniques and newer technology. Surf music in the 60's sounded nothing like metal. Now no one really knows who started "metal" but here are a couple things to think about. The first use of the phrase "heavy metal" was in the song Born to be wild. And people started calling music metal because you already had rock. Now rock use to be the hardest music around. But when bands like Black Sabbath and Kiss first came along fans said the music sounded very heavy. The only way to get heavier than rock is to make it metal. So original metal music came from a dark gritty sound like Sabbath. Not the wailing guitars that we associated it with in the 80's. Kiss eventualy became known as a glam band. But only because they were trying to sell records. The original sound they had , kinda sorta had a lotta base to it and was kinda "heavy". But the base in metal is still a series of notes which make it real music. Unlike rap which is just thumping and it really sucks. I guess you could add Led Zepplin to that heavy sound of the 70's. From what I remember no one really used the term heavy metal until METAL HEALTH by Quiet Riot came out in the early 80's. After that everything that had loud guitars was called metal.

30? More like 50 years ago. Dick Dale 1st recorded "Misirlou" in 1961 or 62 I believe. IIRC, he turned 73 this year.

Guitar World might have crowned him the "Father of Heavy Metal" for playing with an overdriven guitar sound but I disagree.

Needless to say he was playing harder than most surf music bands, and extreme for the early 60's. This was when stuff like this was out

It might have been 63. I was just 8 yo in 63 and just getting into music around then. It helped that my mom was a rocker and listened to that type of music so that's what I got to hear.

He learned to play on a RH guitar but never reversed the strings so he always played with the strings upside down. Even after Leo Fender made him a LH guitar he still had the strings upside down.

I wasn't around yet for another 11 years or so Like you though my mom listened to the "oldies"

I have a pretty eclectic selection of music I like. between grandma and grandpa listening to old country and bluegrass and even playing bluegrass, dad listening to the newer country music (newer in the 70's and 80's that is) my uncle listening to Kiss, Rush,Queen,Yes ect. later in life( late teens) I grew an appreciation for some classical music and blues

As far as that reference to never hearing surf music again, on the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set you can hear a mix of this song where after he says "you will never hear surf music again" he laughs and says "that sounds like a lie to me!". For some reason it was edited out for the first LP. It's a well known fact that as a teenage he used to go see Dick Dale ( they both lived on the west coast where Dick used to tour all the time)...I believe Jimi also learned to string his right-handed guitar from Dick ( both Jimi and Dick were left handed people who played right handed guitars).

Found this do not know how true it is?

It's from "3rd Stone from the Sun" on their 1st album...

I remember hearing this back in the day and thought it was in reference to the Beach Boys...

yup, what i figured too. but he's the only one i've ever seen doing that. hendrix used converted (restrung) rh strats even when he could afford lefties, because he was used to the layout of the controls.

well, as for the musical influence, why not. dale had a very unique sound and style then. as for the guitar: see above post.
