Picture taking things
So the gf's birthday is coming up and I thought I could get her a fancy camera, but I don't know shit about them and I wanna surprise her. I figured she could take some nice pics of the WS.6 while she gets back into her picture taking hobby. So who can help me out here on some info? I don't wanna blow $800 either!!

if you want an affordable SLR without spending a lot of cash on the latest technology, the canon xti is a really, really good camera to start with.

Get her an SLR and she'll be chuffed. Every girl thinks she's a "photographer", no matter how badly her terribly photoshopped shitty pictures come out.
Yes mad. Too many dumb girls uploading "artistic" (Read: badly focused photos of nothing) photo albums to facebook.
HERE'S A PICTURE OF A BENCH. NOTICE HOW I CHANGED IT TO BLACK & WHITE AND MADE THE EDGES BLURRY FOR THE REASON OF FUCK KNOWS WHAT.
NEXT PICTURE: DUCK FACE WITH BEER IN HAND!!
I'M SO CUTE!!
Puke.

if she's serious about the pictures she takes, she'll DEFINITELY appreciate an interchangeable lens dslr like the xs or xti (the most affordable canon dslrs). you can look into nikon as well, they make very good cameras as well, and sony uses minolta optics (which are very high quality). i personally am a canon user, so i know most about them.
any dslr from those 3 makes will take way nicer pictures of the t/a especially once she learns how to work the camera

I can vouch for the rebel xs. I've had mine for nearly a year. Loaded up the 8 GB card a few times now. Only ever charged the camera a few times. There's a bit of a learning curve and you can spend some serious money on lenses, but I love having my slr. Look around and go to some shops to compare some models.

I'm pretty happy with my Canon PowerShot S5IS and I'm sure if you can find one, it's very affordable.

I have a canon power shot a590 which is a monstrous pile of shit.....stay far away from it. It has something wrong with it I'm pretty sure.....takes some of the best blurry pictures you've ever seen though so if she really likes blurry pics I have one I'll sell you cheap.

They shoot movies with Canon 5 and 7D, those are big bucks. I say any Canon you can afford.

they came out with PowerShot SX30IS right now, SX20IS should be going on sale now
they're big cameras
if she's just starting to get into the hobby PowerShot G12 would be better IMHO, it just came out so G11 should be on sale too
