Haha, that article makes mustangs look bad. Funny how C and D and MT always run shit ass 13.8 or 13.9 in LS1 cars but the Mustang Magazine got 12s. You'd think it would be the other way around..........

    Automobile - November 1993

The price of a gallon of gas hovers at about a buck these days, the same as it was nearly twenty years ago in constant dollars. When you have cheap gasoline, and plenty of it, making cars with lots of horsepower is a wonderful way to express automotive enthusiasm.

I hate to say this, but I can honestly remember reading that October 1986 issue of R/T where they blew the engine up in the prototype Mustang.

I can't believe how slow the 80's and early 90's cars are. I still love 3rd gens though.

thats pretty cool. i just ran my oo ss and got a 13.504 @106.64 which is a tenth of a second slower than what the article said for the 01ss with 5 more horse and torque than mine. and mine has 65 thousand miles on it all stock. that makes me feel very good about my cars potential to hold its horse power through the miles

In 1990 the RS was the base model Camaro.

Yeah, that didn't make much sense to pair those two off...

Back then it was hard to compare the "non-top-of-the-line" cars though. Mustangs either had a 4 banger or the 5.0. A Camaro could have a V6, 305 TBI 170hp, 305 TPI 205 HP, 305 TPI 230 hp, or the 350 TPI 245 hp. So you had 4 V8s and a V6 to compare to a bottom end 88hp 4 banger or their top end 225hp 5.0.

My buddy had a brand new 91' RS with the 305 TBI, and it was a real turd.

My mom's Grand Am GT with a Quad 4 was a driver's race.

The Quad 4 was pretty bad ass in its day, depending on what year and car it was in it had 170-190hp. It was probably the most powerful 4 banger at that time. The 305 TBI was a super turd, people bitched about the 305 TPI with automatics (205 hp) but the TBI was absolutely useless unless you enjoyed 16 second timeslips. What a shame that such a sharp looking car is as slow as a civic.

This was a 92' model Grand Am. I think it was 180hp.

I have another friend who has a very clean 91 RS with an M5 in his garage collecting dust. Right next to a 66' Fairlane vert.

I wouldn't mind lifting that off of him someday and dropping a crate motor in it. An LS2 or something..

That would be the shit, I think the Gen III/IV motor swaps are getting easier. A 450hp 383 crate would be cheap and very easy to drop right in though.

    That's true.

I swapped a 400sbc into an IROC years ago... It was an M5 car with 3.73's that would run mid 12's.

It was a blast fucking with the 5.0 boys back in the early 90's. They were used to having their way with Camaro's, and I would kick them in the balls with a stock appearing car.

We used to fuck with them pretty hard. I would pull the shit out of them from a red light, and we would hit the next light, and of course they wanted to ask about the car.

I would tell them that I was a stock 305, and that my mom had a 5.0 just like theirs that would would smoke my IROC. I suggested that they should go get their car checked out.
