    Sounds like a driver issue.

Any errors when you play an MP3 or video?
Of course...check the obvious things. Plugs, power, etc...

First find out if your speakers died or its a internal computer problem, switch the speakers out with a different set (or headphones)

    Things to check:
    Speaker power
    Speaker-computer connection
    No damaged wires
    Volume/mute control on speakers
Volume/mute control on Volume Control application
Volume/mute control on the music player software
    Balance control
Correct settings in Audio Devices Properties
    Audio drivers are enabled
    Audio drivers are working correctly

Have you downloaded anything and used the volume level on the playback...

i did that on my old computer (defrag) and it mistaked one of the sound drives for an unused item (because sound wasnt on at the time.. i had mute on or something.. maybe even just tunred all the way down) and it erased it completely.. i had 2 contact microsoft and they sent me a disc that had the drive to load it back onto my computer.. long and bogus process..

These are all good. If it's at all feasible, I would swap in another hard drive with a "clean" OS to rule out a hardware problem. Fixing software drivers is a PITA when it comes to audio devices.

Sounds like the sound card took a dump. A lot of newer motherbaords have some real crappy sounds chips installed. Go out and buy a $20 PCI sound card, disable one on MB, install new.
