Need some math help..come in if you think you can
I can solve an equation, but when it comes to solving for a variable, it confuses the hell out of me!!
Can someone please explain the following?
A=1/2bh(b1+b2) solve for B1
The B's are to the power of 1 and power of 2. HELP!!

well, you want to isolate the variable you are solving for, so first you would divide the entire equation by 1/2bh, then you would be left with 2a/bh=b1+b2. then you subtract b2 and get 2a/bh-b2=b1. so yes, youre right.

thanks. I wasn't sure if I needed to distribute h(b1+b2) that's what confused me.

you could have distributed, but you would have had to do more steps. after multiplying through by the h, you would later have to divide it out.
A=1/2bh(b1+b2)
A=1/2bhb1+1/2bhb2 distribute
A-1/2bhb2=1/2bhb1 subract the b2 term
(A-1/2bhb2)/(1/2bh)=b1 divide by 1/2bh to isolate the b1
2A/bh-b2=b1 simplify

this ones not so bad either. slope intercept form is:
y=mx+b
m is the slope and b is your y intercept. (when the line crosses the y axis, x will be equal to zero and cancel the m term).
so you already have your b, the y intercept.
y=mx+3/2
now you need to solve for m. youre given 2 points, the x intercept (-2,0) and the y intercept (0,3/2).
there are 2 ways to solve for the slope. first, is to calculate it using the two points. slope is defined as "rise over run", or the change in y divided by the change in x. so the formula would be m=(y1-y2)/(x1-x2).
or, you can plug one of the points into the y=mx+3/2. you cant use the y intercept point, since x is 0 it will cancel out the m, so you have to plug in the x intercept.
y=mx+3/2
(-2,0) x=-2 y=0
0=m(-2)+3/2
solve for m
m=3/4
so y=(3/4)x+3/2
haha, its a little early in the morning for me, so if any of that is unclear let me know.
