Need some help... considering selling :(
First of all I'll say I don't really want to sell my car....
However I do have some issues with my car . I was looking at Mustangs last night and alls I had to do was sign and it was a done deal. Can't even believe I walked in there.
My wife said... I could put all my income tax towards my car and get it repaired and she wouldn't say a word.
1st problem is power steering. Last year in New Jersey I had my power steering pump replaced. It cost $249. Now 1 year later living in Virgina its leaking again. No clue why and can't see any visable issues. Just it leaks and needs to be refilled 2x a month.
2nd problem is a slight oil leak. Only when it warm outside and the car has warmed up I get a small oil leak that hits my exhaust and quickly burns away. I noticed it becase of the plum of smoke and I do need to top off the oil ever other month. I'm not a mechanic but someone told me its probaably a valve cover issues and it needs to be replaced.
After writing this I don't think its a big enough reason to sell my car. I'm just hoping it won't take 3k in repairs to fix it.
Any idea on how much total engine rebuilds cost? I realize this is a broad question but I haven't a clue or a ball park figure.
Honestly I do feel better after venting.... maybe thats all I needed to do. Any advice, price numbers or referrals to any Newport News Virgina Mechanics would be greatly apprciated.

Your right....Its not enough reason to consider selling your car. You already stated you dont want to sell it. Sounds like you have very minor problems that could easily be resolved in less than a day for probably less than a car payment on a new Mustang. Would be an easy choice for me.......
Take it to a dealership and get an estimate. Have them walk you out and you see for yourself where its leaking. Get it fixed. Enjoy knowing you didnt get a new car with 5-6 years worth of payments for a lesser car than you now own.

Hey man, I'm curious about your exact same question....how much does a complete engine rebuild cost on an LS1?
It seems I find a lot of C5s that look to be in good shape but have high mileage. To pick one up for ~10k with 130,000 on the odometer and drive it straight to the mechanics for a complete engine overhaul makes sense to me, since I'll probably have it for awhile. I don't mind how much shows on the odometer once I know I've got a fresh engine under the hood.
Also, I moved to Hampton about a month or so ago!

sounds like your trying sell yourself on selling the TA. With that in mind, dont sell your TA you will regret it.
ls1 engines are easy to work on..
oil leak- since you said the oil leak is hitting the exhaust then maybe its from the valve cover or heads(doubtfull), easy fix that you could do yourself in a day. Costs less then $30 and some time.
the valve cover leak=bad o-ring gasket for the valve cover easy fix...
Power steering leak-check the hoses... again less then $30 and some time.
btw the new mustangs dont pull as hard as a ls1, plus if people think 4th gen f-bodies have cheap looking interior, new mustant interior looks like cheap truck interior.
as far as engine rebuild, what makes you think you need one. I know many owners with 200k on the car/engine and still race them...Last edited by ibanez7; 01-10-2010 at 10:37 AM.

if your going to use your tax return:
try fixing the two leaks yourself w/ a friend
use tax money for mods (cam and other go faster parts)

Not big enough reason for selling. Just keep an eye on the fluids and once funds allow, repair/replace. I'm going on my second year of owning my car and I have already replaced:
Carrier
Water pump
Radiatior
Car's warranty expired back in June and paid out of pocket. Oh well.
extreme dimensions, driveshaft shop, harrop, hid(35watt/6k) lows, hurst, k&n, led fogs, maverick man, mishimoto, nitto, revshift, slp, stern st-1, smoked sidemarkers, whiteline poly radius rod bushings
