My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
Might get a small dog
never had a dog before, but my fiance had one of these little guys all her life until she left home. We are thinking of getting a male Bichon Frise. Hopefully purebred. But the question is, what does it cost to "maintain" a dog? like vet stuff and food....is it 2000 a year? 4000?

I've got two dogs. One is about 45 pounds, the other 65 pounds. I spend less than $20/month to feed both of them. About $300 each per year at the vet.

i've never been fond of "drop-kickers": ankle biting dogs like that serve no purpose and are just annoying, the way they leap about, jumping up on you and barking and yipping loudly at the slightest noise or provocation.
If you want to have a small pet, cats on the other hand are small, low maintenance and are just as loving as dogs (especially neutered males).
Okay, let the flames begin... I know how most of you guys hate cats, but this is jmho.

Prefer medium to large dogs. Have a Chow mix, my parents have 8 or 9 Chows, lost count. Largest one looks like a Black Lion @ close to 100lbs.

and as for a cat as some kind of a pet, the easiest thing to do to make a cat worth a shit is raise it with dogs....or at least like a dog....other wise break out the .22

I hated small dogs like most guys until I got one. They are great companions and he doesn't really bark often at all. I do have a large dog (australian shepherd) to offset the bitch-dog though. I won't live somewhere that doesn't allow dogs, even just on upper floors, akes me think I will be around dog haters.

If you are looking at a tiny dog like that, why not just get a cat. Same annoying effect.
I like Boxers and Great danes. They do not bark much, will protect the owner and family, and are fun to play with.

I have a Dalmation, Great dog. Very well behaved and he knows all his commands. He also knows what to do and not to do. Only problem with him is keeping him clean, he loves to get dirty

WRONG!!!! We have taught Velcro to fetch. He does pretty well too, brings it right back to you. Sometimes you'll be sitting on the couch, he'll come up right behind you and drop it right on your shoulder and it rolls down on your lap. that's how we know he wants to play fetch. Funny as shit to have a cat play fetch....
