Who'd have thought there was a 270-mph land speed racing venue in Maine? Bob Wanner and Marl Sotomayor, that's who.Who'd have thought there was a 270-mph land speed racing venue in Maine? Bob Wanner and Marl Sotomayor, that's who. Those are the two guys who spotted the old Loring AFB bomber base nearby Caribou, Maine, and realized that it would support the type of top-speed races currently seen in Maxton, North Carolina, and in Beeville, Texas. But, unlike those standing-mile races, the Loring event is a mile and a half long with a mile of shutdown.
