Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell

Anyone read the book? Just finished it, unfreaking believeable what he went through and still survived.

For those who aren't familiar - 4 man Navy SEAL team dropped in Afghanistan to find a major Taliban leader, they are ambushed on a mountain by 100 - 200 Taliban soldiers. 3 of the 4 SEALs are killed in the fight, but Luttrell is able to fight them off, hide, and eventually crawl down the mountain, then is protected by a village until he is rescued. This happened in '05 and the book was published in '07.

Crazy/scary/sad experience. I highly recommend the book. I'm going to read it again.

Yeah I read and was very dissappointed no one thought to use the sat phone when they had no communications from the start. However, it was a very brave story, but an example of what not to do as a Special Operations operator. There is a reason why you do this thing called pre-patrol inspections... and why you have go and no-go criteria that needs to be mandated and followed properly!

Lone Survivor is one of my favorite books, I couldn't read it out in public cause I was watery eyed half the time I was reading it. Very, very good book.

i read mostly WWII books... but i think i'll have to pick this one up before i set off for my vacation...

And since we are on the subject of military books Master of Chaos by Linda Robinson is pretty good not action packed like Lone Survivor but it has stories about missions that SF was involved in over the years in Panama, El Salvador, The Middle East, Somalia, etc.

sad thing is after going through all that and coming home where its supposed to be safe, some punks were riding around and just for kicks shot and killed his dog infront of his house.
I got all teary eyed listening to the 911 tapes and thought for sure he was going to kill all of the guys but he tracked them and let the police arrest them

The last book I read was the heroin diaries. now that is a fucked up book. you can tell when nikki sixx was stoned and when he wasn't by his entries.

I will definatly have to pick that book up as well.

You would probably like Five Years to Freedom by James N. Rowe

It is Rowe's story of survival in a POW camp and escape.

I'm no heavy reader by any means but I couldn't put it down. In fact I think I have read 3 books in my life

No disrespect to Luttrell or any of the other SEALs who died. But besides making some rather questionable calls before and during the mission the book seems a little unbeliveable to me. I know that SEALs are very good at PR but the book seems like it was upgraded by hollywood before it even becomes a movie. Just seemed a little over the top to me. Not that takes anything away from the men who died
