    Question Learning the Arabic language

I need to take a foreign language to fulfill my degree requirements. Does anyone have experience with Arabic? To give some insight into how hard the language be to learn and grasp for someone like myself, a native English speaker with minimal experience in a handful of other languages? By all means I realize it will be no walk in the park, but I've always been interested in the language and feel it will be very useful for future career aspirations.

I had some training in it. It seems to work better when you are carrying a gun and screaming. The locals always seemed to listen better when there is a gun pointed at them

From what I know just like every other language their is different dialects, people from egypt that speak arabic cant talk to people thats in Iraq cause its almost like their totally different languages, kinda like english their is usa english then their is uk english lol. And I am with infantry guy on this one ogof-stop pretty much the only one I know how to spell lol, I actually have a book with some phrases/words in arabic somewhere around here if its not already packed up. You also have to learn how to talk with the back of your throat its hard to explain. But you get the point I took some classes at the beginning of last year before I got here and I did not retain any of it except for stop and bitch lol.

Yeah, I've heard that it's a great program to learn languages with, but since I'm required to take a language for my degree, I figure I might as well take advantage of the well-versed professors for something that will useful.

I understand about the dialects, I was actually looking at maps last night that showed where the different ones are spoken.

Speaking of the UK - US English differences, when we first moved here my mother took the car to a car wash (One of the gas station automatic ones) and asked the attendant for "a spanner to remove the ariel." It took about 10 minutes of explaining for the attendant to figure out she needed a wrench to remove the antenna

Go for Latin. It can be used to figure out many languages that evolved from it.
