    How much to record?

I was thinking starting next year (2009, maybe doing it now) about starting to record things like Serial #'s on my electronics, and etc as I heard this is good to have in case of the unfortunate of a fire or scumbag thieves. Same with receipts (make digital copies, or just store the originals?).

What would be the best info to record, what about things that don't necessarily have a value aka priceless? or didn't actually purchase at a store or no longer have receipt, take pics? Any other info, do you do this?

Thanks for reading. BTW I have one of those fire resistant safes that is waterproof (so if a house fire the fire hoses wont drown it) so storing digital pictures/etc on my external hard drive and actual receipts/etc is my means of protecting said content.

Besides the methods you mentioned, if you have one-of-a-kind valuables or collectibles, try to take pics or better yet videos of them.

Any reciepts and serial numbers are good especially if stolen. Take pics of everything and store on a flash drive. You could then keep that in the safe. Maybe even do two copies and keep one at a relatives house just in case.

Digital photographs stored on a CD would be best.

Be sure to store the CD away from your house, like in a safe deposit box.

Keep a directory (oops, sorry, folder) just for this purpose. Each time you add to it, make a new CD.

Hmm, seems like something maybe I should do...

How far should I go with this? I mean even take pictures of my DVD's? (just an example)

Why videos? Not saying its not a bad idea but is this better for some reason?

A three dimensional, moving record displays condition and value of the object(s) much better than a simple photograph would.

If you can only take still pics, make sure you are holding or next to the item, if possible.
