When I went to NYC the firefighters seemed to drive like jackasses. Way too fast for the cramped trafficky streets. And they seemed to do random parade laps around the city doing the siren with everyone hanging out and waving with flags? This was spring break of '07...

I saw the exact same thing happen with two police cars one on an episode of COPS. Answering the same call and were coming to an intersection (from perpendicular to each other) and hit each other.

After driving surface streets inside Atlanta, it makes me happy that I live somewhere rural where they made each lane wider than the cars driving it.

Yup. Driving in NYC can be like being a Kamikaze pilot. When I went to LI last summer, I had folks cutting me off and almost sideswiping me. But I agree with the radio contact. When I was a first responder back in high school, the radios were going nuts with locations, and destinations. But I never heard of collisions over the radio.

No kidding. We were in a rental car and went through NY on business one year. We needed to make a left (I forget where) and the guy who was driving couldn't do it. We ended up making three rights.

Our Protocals in Texas... Treat every intersection as a stop sign, make a complete stop, clear the inter, then proceed, also treat every lane you cross, as a new intersection.... It may take a few extra seconds, but you're no good if you become another emergency.
