HOT ROD 60th Anniversary Exhibit Now Open
HOT ROD Magazine, which helped launch the Petersen Publishing empire in 1948 and helped forge the hot rod movement, is turning 60 and will be honored with a special exhibit at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California. The exhibit, Celebrating 60 Years of Hot Rod Magazine, opens Apr. 2 in conjunction with the Museum's monthly Prolong(r) Twilight Cruise Night, and runs through October 2008 at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA.
The exhibit will feature dozens of covers and photos from Hot Rod's vast archives, along with artifacts and vehicles culled from the illustrious 60-year history of the popular magazine, according to Greg Sharp, curator of the Parks Museum. Because of its rich history, Sharp said the exhibit will constantly change, with new vehicles and memorabilia added during its run. Significant HOT ROD Magazine cover and feature cars that will be on display include:
* Wally Parks "Suddenly" 57 Plymouth
* The Pierson Bros, Coupe - April 1950 issue
* Ed Iskenderian's T - May 1948 issue
* Ray Brock's El Caballo - Feb. 1955 issue
* Wally Parks A-V8 Roadster
* Kenny Bernstein's Top Fuel dragster - the first ever to go 300 mph
"HOT ROD Magazine caused the international explosion of the hot rod sport, and founder Bob Petersen gave us all a job," said Tony Thacker, executive director of the Parks Museum. "The late Wally Parks, founder of the NHRA and who our Museum is named after, began work on the magazine almost immediately and was named its first editor in time for the October 1949 issue. As Hot Rod celebrates its 60th Anniversary and the Museum's its 10th anniversary, this is a fitting tribute to the magazine that made it all possible."
The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., PST. Current NHRA members are admitted free. The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is located at Fairplex Gate 1, 1101 W. McKinley Ave. in Pomona.
