Exclamation HOT ROD 2008 Pump Gas Drags Coverage

HOT ROD 2008 Pump Gas Drags Coverage
It's hard to believe this will be the fifth annual HOT ROD Pump GasDrags(TM), but with four years of practice we've finally got it dialedin. Like we said in the '07 event coverage, we're not going to change athing for 2008. Actually that's not totally true; there's one littlechange, but 'racers are gonna like it. And here's the date: Saturday,May 10, 2008.
By now you should know the PGD basics. First, all the badass streetracers in the country send us applications begging to be one of the 75cars that gets hand-selected by the HOT ROD staff to be invited to CompCams in Memphis, Tennessee. At Comp Cams, all the cars are filled with10 gallons of Rockett Brand 93-octane spec gasoline. Next, we make allthe race cars drive 30 miles to Memphis Motorsports Park, where packedgrandstands watch and bet as the cars that survived the drive duke itout to qualify for a 32-car field. Then heads-up, wheelstanding chaosensues.
What kinds of cars will be there? Basically, it's for stock-bodied, fullyupholstered cars with stock or bolt-on front suspension, tires under111/4 inches at the tread (or with any size drag radials), and a minimumweight of 3,300 pounds. All the street-legal mumbo-jumbo is alsorequired--and we do check for it. So it's for your basic, overpoweredstreet race cars, but they've gotta have all the NHRA safety equipmentfor the speeds they run.
Do you want to just come watch? Do it. It's free to check out the techinspection at Comp Cams on the morning of Saturday, May 10, 2008. Next,be at Memphis Motorsports Park around 3 or 4 p.m. to see the cars rollin and start to race. Smart gearheads also show up for the Memphistest-'n'-tune on the previous Thursday night, as lots of PGD racers arethere for tune-up runs.
Oh, and that one little rule change? We're going to let each racer maketwo qualifying passes instead of just the one they got last year. Thefans and the racers should like that.
