Got A Samsung Smart TV? Read This

Kinda shopping for a new TV and found this little tidbit.

Today In Creepy Privacy Policies, Samsung’s Eavesdropping TV | TechCrunch

Note the key part of the privacy policy...

Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition.

    Gotta love technology.

Kinda funny I was thinking 1984 before I got to the part quoting it. I leave my voice recognition turned off. It only works so so and I just find it faster to do it myself on my samsung.

The way I understand it, is that hackers have the ability to turn on or off certain features of cameras as well as microphones without the knowledge of the consumer. Even as far as disabling the light that shows your webcam is in use for instance. I'm sure that TV software can be hacked just as easily. Even new appliances, just as vehicles, are all going to be tapped into the "system" at some point.

Nope. As a guy with experience in this area of expertise, I can tell you that with any modern webcam, this is not possible.

This sort of thing is alot of "fear mongering" as they call it in politics. The webcam is a perfect example...those "status" LEDs are wired into the power circuit...that's hardware, not something that can be "hacked" as there is no code involved. When the webcam receives power, the light turns on, when the light goes out, that means the webcam is not powered and therefore, cannot capture video or images. Period.

I always laugh when I read the ridiculous claims in these articles...anything to get people to read the stuff that's posted.

Not all Samsung Smart TV's are voice activated. Take mine for example. I have a 60" Samsung 3D LED Smart TV and it came out before they started that voice activated tech. I'm all good.

I'm not up to date with all the specifics on webcam use as I never use a webcam and in fact it's one of the first preloaded softwares that I delete when I get a new laptop along with all the other bloatware.

But as far as technology in general goes, lets just say, hypothetically if you'd like, that there will be software installed in new cars that can allow someone to remotely control it while you're driving, or microphones in a smart TV to listen in on your private conversations, and with everything going wireless, including home utility meters which can communicate with and distinguish individual appliance usage, etc... I will venture a guess that there will be a new breed of hackers surface just to screw with peoples personal lives just because they can because the doors will be open. I'm not even going to mention how the the government could utilize such individual privacy concerns

I personally use a drill press in the garage...makes it much easier and I dont have to worry about drilling holes in my coffee table or dining room table.

Dont ever buy Havarti cheese either...those have the most microphones per square inch...
