ever heard this riddle?

I was thinking about this while ago. It's been 30 years since my dad told me this riddle and I'm not sure if this is how it went. I'm in a nyquil induced haze right now too so I'm not sure if I'm even thinking about it correctly. I just remember as a kid this thing kicking my ass trying to figure it out.


3 guys split a motel room that was $21 so they paid $7 a piece. Later one of them goes to get ice and bumps into the manager. The manager says " I overcharged you boys $4" and gives him $4 back. The guy sticks one in his pocket. Goes back to the room and splits the $3 amongst them. Now they paid $6 each which is $18 plus the $1 in his pocket makes $19. Where's the other $2?

12 + 5 = 17....which is the same as 21 minus 4

Like I said, the way the riddle is worded is what makes it confusing to most. I stated the answer.

still can't solve it that way...... 5+6+6=17. You have to either work it backwards or change the word problem. When you're 12 years old though it's a real bitch to figure it out.

agreed....I usually take it with sudafed. Probably not supposed to do that and since my wife is a nurse I never tell her how I take medicine because she bitches at me. Another thing is I double up on the nyquil dose. It lays your ass out so even without the decongestant you're going to bed whether you want to or not.
