I think a lot of the price difference is just different taxes.

Off road diesel is dyed red.
It is not different in anyway. Off road means its used in heavy machinery ie Caterpillar stuff..... and farm tractors.
If you are caught using the off road fuel in your pick-um truck, you will be fined heavily I do believe.

the difference is big fines if they catch you with offroad diesel in your tank for your street vehicle.
offroad diesel is for farm implements and the like. i don't know the specifics of it but it's priced cheaper to help farmers in their overhead costs.
there are times when they will check your fuel tanks and if they catch you with the wrong fuel they will fine you heavily. the offroad diesel is colored blue or green to differentiate it from regular diesel.

Thats true for the new body style (lmm) duramax mid year 2007 and up. the Lb7 and lbz duramax will run better and make more power on off road diesel. the reason is the 2007.5+ (lmm) engines come equipped with a particulate filter and catalytic convertor that will become plugged by high sulfur fuel.
the EPA mandated reductions in sulfur content in nonroad diesel fuels is as follows:
- 500 ppm effective June 2007 for nonroad, locomotive and marine (NRLM) diesel fuels
- 15 ppm (ultra-low sulfur diesel) effective June 2010 for nonroad fuel, and June 2012 for locomotive and marine fuels
the low sulfur fuel has lower BTUs because the process to remove sulfur also pussifies the fuel. the high sulfur fuel lubricates your injection pump and will give it longer life.

we have off road premium gas here, for boats and shit like that and it cheap as balls. Same thing tho, if you get caught running purple premium in your street car you are phucked.
