The Day The Earth Stood Still

Saw the original 1951 classic plenty of times and rented it from blockbuster. Went to see the new version, was close to the original in some scenes, good flick. Don't know where the N.Y. Giants are gunna play the rest of the season tho ...

welllllll, it was not bad. saw it yesterday, visually nice, the story: well.... mr reeves cultivates the absence of acting, ms conelly basically looks scared all the time. very nice job from kathy bates. the end makes no sense at all. all in all: good entertainment.
when we left the theater, my girlfriend and i simultaneously started to sing the theme song from "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy". weird....

so long and thanks for all the fish

Michael Rennie was ill the day the earth stood still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear
Claude Raines was the invisible man
Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space
And this is how the message ran:

    Science Fiction - Double Feature
Dr. X will build a creature
See androids fighting Brad and Janet
Ann Francis stars in Forbidden Planet
Oh-oh at the late night, double feature, picture show.

I thought it was a decent attempt to update the original. Still prefer the original though.

I was worried, the AP reviewer trashed the movie. Overall I liked it tho, first movie we've seen on opening day in I don't know how many years. Nice special effects.

Watching it now, it's pretty good so far. Haven't seen the original for comparison.

You must. I haven't seen the original in about 10 years, but remember thinking at the time it wasn't a bad movie for the 50s. Special effects don't compare, of course. A few improvements in 50 years....

honestly, i barely remember the original. interestingly, the originals often stand up to the remake. they often have more charme, or soul if you will. the 50s war of the worlds is a movie i can still enjoy a lot, although i really liked the new one.

Check out Rolfe's review of this movie vs. the old one.

He also does The Thing comparisons. I never knew Carpenter was more in tune with the novel than the original.

In any case, I was wrong about the Green Peace, but I knew it was something along the peace lines..
