I have it to never sleep, but you might want to use that if you plan on leaving it on over night

Set the HDs to turn off after an hour or two.. that will considerably lengthen the life of them...

I set my system to never sleep, but I turn it off when I'm done with it. XP takes a whole minute to boot up. Just shut it down when your done and you'll save some money and have a longer living PC. Just put it in sleep mode manually if your only going to be away for just a short time.

Some people say it's actually harder on the system when you turn it on and off through-out the day instead of just leaving it on

You have to know your system pretty good to use hibernation ... computers have big problems coming out of hibernation or sleep say with the movement of your mouse to wake it up ... they usually freeze and sometimes you can barely reboot ..
I have found that these settings worked nice in XP
Screensaver on after 17 min. (Use the original XP screensaver as it uses less resources and doesn't heat up the system)
Hard Disks off at 20-30 min.
Monitor off in an hour.
Hibernation after 2 hours.
In Vista you have 3 power settings which you may play with ... I use the high perf power option in always on mode as this pushes the right *juice* to my devices ... and the system permission seems to like it ..
Vista has many many power and hibernation options that you wished XP had ..

My computer's set to shut down the monitor over time, but when I'm away I either put the screensaver (password) up, or put it in sleep every now and then. Shut down the computer every night, and it turns itself on in the morning at the same time.
Just make sure you have a functioning antivirus, firewall, and password protect your admin account. Make sure all security and OS software is up-to-date, and run spyware scans periodically. That's Comp101 for you. You are running Windows correct? Laptop or desktop?

not necessarily....you really never need to turn off a computer, only about once everytwo weeks to let the ram refresh... these sleep and hibernate methods are only to preserve power, so if you dont care about power usage leave it on all night... my computer has been on more or less for the duration of the past 2 years and no problems, only upgrades (+200 gig hd, better graphics card and sound card) and still no probs

well if you leave your computer on for long periods of time, electron tunneling occurs in the components such as the processor which is meant to be a insulator but after electron tunneling it becomes a conductor, which makes the process fail, but gradually the tunneling lessens the performance over time
