Coal mines.
I have a few buddies that work for a local mining company and i have applied also. Just looking for some opinions from anybody that has worked or is working in the mines. I know it is hard work and long hour. Just looking to get some more info.

Yeah, if they offer a position in Chile, don't take it.

I go spelunking in an abandoned mine near me. Never in a million years would I want to work in one.

Sounds horrible. I would ask the 32 guys trapped in Chile how they like it.

You think if one guy goes insane and kills all the other people they will still rescue him?

It won't hurt you guys to try and offer a serious answer every once and a while you know. Is mining a dream job? Obviously not. But not everyone is born in the big city. This may be the best available job opportunity for this young man right now...
And the situation in Chile hopefully doesn't apply here as there have been major strides in mine operations/safety over the years in this country. But of course there are still mining incidents here, even this year I think. What I'm not sure of is the injury/fatality rate in mining as compared to other 'dangerous' jobs. I believe there is a fairly low fatality rate, but a fairly high injury rate. I'd look into the workers compensation laws/rules that apply to mining before going in, for that 'just in case' scenario.
Other than that, I have no useful info, never worked in a mine or known anyone who has. But yeah, like fasne above said, have you asked your buddies who are already working there? Or perhaps you are hoping to find more objective feedback...

The mine is a pit mine not underground. The pay is good. They offer great benefits and from what my buddy's say it is a good company to work for. Schmalgar is right I'm looking for an outside point of view.Yes it is dangerous but around here is is about the only option for a guy that doesn't have a college degree to make some good money.

It's a strip mine? If so, I wouldn't work for them just on principle.

idgaff about the trees or wildlife and shit. What I care about is the fact that it makes the ground useless. All you can do is use it as a landfill. Even if you put dirt back in it, you can't build on it because it keeps settling for seemingly ever. It wastes valuable real estate where a nudie bar, or hooters, or buffalo wild wings could go.
