    Camera people *need advise*

I'm going on a cruise to Alaska in late July with my wife. We want to buy a camera before the trip. I only want digital. The problem is, I haven't been paying much attention to the camera world for a while and I don't know what's what right now.

I want a camera with a good optical zoom. It's a high migration time for whales in late July, and I'm sure they'll be out, but probably not right next to the ship. I need somthing that can get up close and personal. I would also like the ability to shoot some video and night shots. I plan on getting a 2 gig card.

I am looking to spend between $350-$500 on the camera. Any suggestions?

you also want to look at features, are you looking for a point and shoot camera, or something more high end where you can manually set stuff like shutter speed etc?... once you figure that out it will narrow it down

check out camera reviews... here is a link for ZDNETs top camera picks...

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

i think Sony Came out with a brand new cyber-shot that has an anti-vibration lens. could be helpful if you're on a boat. Those lenses are the real deal too.

You wanna do some whale watching? Come on down to jim thorpe. You wont need any optical zoom, hell youll be lucky if they fit in the picture. Up close and personal? No problem, most are willing to pose, as long as you arent as ugly as them. And dont worry about a shortage, its like a migration of them every time the temp goes above 70*. Someone spare me from this town

    Remember these simple rules
    1. Bigger the lens the better
    2. You want CCD not CMOS
    3. Digitial zoom means shit because you can do it on your computer, you want a nice optical zoom
    4. Anything bigger than 5 megapixel is useless unless you are printing photos bigger than 5x7
    5. Get Nikon if you want the best

I have a Sony DSC-P92 right now. It is a 5.0 megapixel. I am also looking for a new one somewhere in the 6-7 megapixel range. I have been eyeing the DSC-W70, it is a great Sony cyber shot w/ 7.1 megapixels! It looks like a really nice camera!
