The ceiling drywall was done last. Not first.

And not one of the guys here doing the actual work spoke English. 5 days. No call backs. In fact, the attic guy that was supposed to come out and put the insulation over the now dry-walled skylight holes in our ceilings (they were big skylights), install the fan up there last Saturday, has still never shown up. No calls. No nothing.

I haven't paid them yet. I'm not calling them again to come finish. When they want their money, they'll finish.
I could go on with this little adventure, but I'll leave it at that.

Same thing happened when we had our roof completely replaced at the end of 2016.

That is what happens when dealing with a general contractor out here. I should have just used 3 different contractors. The discount wasn't worth the aggravation.
That's business as usual for many contractors all around the country. Of course the sales men are great. If they weren't great you wouldn't go with them and they would only be sales men for 2 months. I have to say I have heard many many, many more negative stories than positive. And every contractor I have told this too they always have the same thing to say. "Not me or my company, that's not how we do it." I can tell you I have subcontracted enough work to say with a straight face that 85% were lying when they said they and their businesses don't operate that way. Even as a contractor paying for subcontracted work that if done well will lead to dozens of jobs in the future I can't get a call back sometimes.

So now I just tell them to prove it to me with their work and communication. They get 1 chance and if they can't do the work right and communicate then I'll be glad to give my 50K+ worth of subcontracting jobs a year to someone else.

That's basically what I told them from the start. They got one shot. They knew that we have quite a bit we'd like to do around here. I've been wanting to do several upgrades. We want to remodel the bathrooms and the kitchen next. That alone should have been enough incentive. But, they blew it.

My ex didn't have project managers. He and or his partner personally went out and gave estimates. I made sure that all calls were made and that everything went as planned and if it didn't, was on top of it.

Today I decided to call the girl in the office that I'd been talking to and she had no idea that the guy that was supposed to be here last Saturday never showed up. Mind you, I haven't paid these people in full yet. I don't think I've ever done business with a company that was so out of touch.

It almost makes me wish that my ex was still in CA At least I know that I could count on him to do a quality job.

    It's crazy.

It's almost like that there's so much work available for them that they don't give a rats ass on quality or craftsmanship anymore.

In some markets there are. I have had a much tougher time finding reliable, skilled employees than finding work. I have apartment mangers throwing 100+ window jobs, 30+ patio doors job etc at us but when you don't have a reliable workforce you just end up looking like a unreliable dick. And finding an reliable employee that can do a good job without being supervised is almost impossible. Have even had a few guys where if one of the owners is on the job site with them their finish work turns out good with very little input for the owner. So then why the F can't you do that... without one of the owners of the company being here with you?

Pretty much. Had this one guy Bobby, 20+ years in the industry. Took him almost an entire day to install 1 side of soffit. Should have been able to get all 4 sides done in a day no problem. About a 30 foot section.... no weird corners or anything, 1 story ranch home so he was on a 4 foot step ladder. I watched him talk on the phone for 3 hours and in that 3 hours he put up probably 2-3 pieces of soffit. He was pretty upset when I said he wasn't getting paid for the day.

After my time in the Army I would have stroked out watching that. I know I would have booted his ass out in about an hour at most.

Yea, he was let go shortly after that day. I wanted to get out of my truck and tell him to leave multiple times but one of the owners told me to give him the day and see what he gets done.

So I called the girl from the attic specialists on Tuesday, told her their guy never showed up Saturday. She calls back last night at 8:15 pm, and asked if tomorrow (today) at 1:00 pm is a good time for him to finish up in the attic. I said sure, but we've got other appointments and things to do and he has to be on time. She says she understands, is very sorry and he'll be there.

It's now 4:36 and no one has shown up. This is too much.

Strong storms probable this afternoon. Secured a spot under the awning here at work to keep the larger hail at bay. Up to baseball size possible and I'm not taking any chances.

Tornados look to hit further east, but you just never know in this state...
