Sorry, I was in the IAMAW once, never again.
Unions have outlived their usefulness.
Those folks should be grateful to have a job.

Yeah, I'd love to find a "Proud to be NON-union" sticker and put it on my truck.

fuck unions... i hate them... the only thing they do is make sure some fuck head that does teh same job as you but does half the work that you do gets paid the same amount as you... and then it keeps the boss from fireing the lazy swine...

Didn't see anything that relates to $5 a gallon in the article.

Agreed. When I was an apprentice for a pipefitting union, I got laid off from two companies. Worked two months for one company, got laid off for three months. Got hired by another company and worked one month, got laid off for three weeks. After layoff number two, I got worried because I had bills. PLUS, I had to pay Union dues. Got hired at my current job, back in automotive, and emailed the union and resigned. Got a call from the Union rep telling me he was disappointed in me and my decision to leave, but, I had bills and a mortgage to pay and I needed money.

Seniority is the key in a union. When I retired from the AF, I joined a union in Alaska and couldn't find a job to save my ass for two months with them.
Once I quit the union and looked for work the old fashioned way, I found work.

who goes on strike in a recession?
oil companies shouldn't have any problem finding replacments for all of them.
They do'nt go into much detail in the article as to why they are failing to come to an agreememnt other than "safety and health benefits"
While safety is great reason, couldn't be too much of an issue as there are plenty of other routes to enforce safety regs than going on strike these days.
as for "more health benefits"... let's see how much health care they have when someone else is doing their job!
When the country is approaching record unemployemnt levels in decades is not the time to be going on strike asking for "more".

Some unions are grossly overpowered. I feel lucky to have mine. The musicians union does not do much for me, but it can save your ass sometimes.
Biggest two things they do for me is make sure I get paid for the work that I have already done.
In addition, I am currently on strike with one of my symphonies, but that is because they tried to pass a 67% pay cut this year. After about 30% in pay cuts from previous years.

Just like anything else, unions have a positive and a negative. If your pro-union you focus on the positive. If your anti-union you focus on the negative.

omg not the union talk i go through this at every family gathering... union mom and uncle both for it ... i can't stand talking about it theres so many sides of good and bad ..... they help you find work if you are one of the few that actually do work, you get the pentions, health coverage.... but this is pipeliners and boilermakers i'm talking about ... its way different than factory unions and automotive
