SBR info
Does anybody know the guidelines of owning an SBR? I know about having to have the ATF tax stamp, and have it engraved and so forth the question is more can you convert a standard length AR into an SBR with just a barrel swap? For instance I recently purchased my fathers AR due to his financial problems. It has an A2 stock and full length heavy competition barrel etc. At work we use AR's with collapsible stocks and like a 11.5 or 12" barrel (don't know exact length yet but it falls within SBR guidelines under 16"). My wife wants a replica of it to practice with (without the burst), so do I have to buy a SBR upper with barrel through a lvl3 and go through the whole ATF process that way (like the full auto deal on lowers) or can I just find a barrel and install it then register it that way? I know you can't convert to full auto like that, but not sure on the SBR.

you may swap the barrel out. but before you do, the lower has to be registered as a NFA SBR by your class 3 dealer, engraved, blah. You may only put the barrel on after the tax stamp has come, or the dealer can do the work now, but you cant have the gun before the stamp comes.
