Post Range Thoughts - Think I'll Ditch the EOTech

I took my Sig 556 to the range today after church to do some shooting at the 50 yard line.

I tried four different kinds of ammo - American Eagle 5.56, Lake City 08 production M183, Lake City 09 production M183, and 62 gr. HP .223 Brown Bear.

I started with the EOTech in front of the little flip-to-side 3x magnification unit. It was all over the place with each of the types of ammo with and without the magnifier.

I took it all off and put the Sig rotary rear sight back on, went through a few bursts to get the POI back and started eating the bulls-eye.

    What's up with that!?

You'd figure a 3x scope would give a little more precision than battle sights with a front post that looks more like a brick on it's end than any kind of match sight. Right?

So I'm keeping the rotary on and the EOTech is in the closet. It's lighter overall this way anyways. With the 512, the magnifier and a full mag it was almost impossible to hold the weapon one handed w/o flipping it sideways and using the right forearm to support the stock. Now I'm looking for someone selling a Tritium front post...

As for the rifle... The Sig did what Sigs are supposed to do. It's eaten everything I've fed it w/o a single malfunction yet (1k rds +/-). The action still isn't as smooth as the early serial # rifles which had mostly Swiss manufactured parts in 'em but it has buttered up some. Overall, "It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

Something is wrong with that EOTech.....I drill em with any of my AK's and red dots all day....out to 150 yards.....bout as good as these old eyes can go anymore without some magnification...

I have a 2nd one currently on top of one of my AKs.

I'll have to grab the ammo bag and head back out to see if it fares any better.

I'm halfway glad it wasn't working well.

Shooting with iron sights (assuming one can still see) is so much more rewarding than just finding the dot and squeezing the trigger.

I got a lot of time today with it.

I shoot iron sights for the most part. The one thing I liked about the laser. Where the red laser dot was.. Was where the round would go. I did not have to be looking down the barrel to fire. I could fire while bringing it on target.

It is difficult to debate the iron sites vs. red dot/laser/scope....each has it's place....but I will say... I always train iron sites and teach iron sites ( Grandson/Daughters)...as one must be able to be quick and accurate with iron sites to be effective in the field and real world. As we see in the thread....failures happen....iron sites do not fail.

By the by - the EOTech's are both fine. The sight rail's hold-down screws were backing themselves out. Looks like a John Q. Knucklehead in NH forgot the locktite.

Eotechs are some of the best sites out there. They allow acurate shooting at many distances and are rugged and relatively light weight. With that being said I have seen one or two go bad but it is usally not a problem of not holding a zero. My .02

I like reflex sights, but good iron sights are always needed. It's too bad that many people can't even use them correctly. I guess that's a by-product of too much reliance on technology and not enough on the basics. I've got a few lasers, but overall I don't like them unless the shot is to be very, very quick.

Glad your EOtech is okay. It's not too often do I hear of malfunctions with them.

On a side note, I just bought a Daisy 840 Grizzly BB gun for my ten year old son (it's the improved version of my 840 that my dad gave me over 35 years ago that STILL works) The model I bought for my son has a fiber optic front sight. Really a great set up to stress the importance of focus on the front sight. That's on a $40 BB gun and it is an excellent system for fast target acquisition and sight alignment. I'm kinda curious why peep-type irons on M4-ish rifles don't have more fiber optic options for a front sight. It would be inexpensive, durable, and very close to the same sight picture you get with most reflex styles.

EO techs are the shit! I just saw your post about the sight rail screws backing out. Don't know how I missed that.

Don't tell the Dutch this. They asked me why I had an extra site on my weapon and I said in case the other fails and they laughed. Oh well they will learn someday.

Exactly. EoTech with iron sights FTW. Eotech dies, transition to iron sights. I have qualified at the range with both, no change in score.

Yeah, Sig used non-standard (aka AR-15 spec) height sights so none of the holo or red-dot sights will co-witness unless I spend $$ swapping out the OE bits.

Up close you can get pretty accurate just looking through the window. I wouldn't do any hostage shots but I think you could get lead on target in an emergency.
