wii wireless setup

I recently bought a wii and got a wireless router. i got my laptop wireless but the wii won't work. it sees the router but when i try to connect it won't go. gives me a error code. anyone know how to make this damn thing wireless?

What are the security settings on the router set to?

i matched the settings that are on the router but it gives the same code.
when i tried to get the laptop to connct for the first time wireless it acted the same way. i finally got it to work by connecting a eithernet cable and downloaded the settings. the wii doesnt have an eithernet port just usb and it would have to be a long cable or i gotta move a t.v. and the wii to the other room to connect with a cable if it was possible.

2 things I thought of are, could i run a cable from my laptop to it and download settings or could i use a memory card?

could i use the laptop even though the router is wired to my desktop which is the primary link?
