What would cause this noise?
What would make my computer just shut down in the middle of anything, just shut right off and start making a "nee nerr nee nerr nee nerr" noise (think: foreign cop car/ambulance type of noise)?? Its coming from within the computer, and the only way I can get it to quit is by unplugging the power and the phone line.

It only does it randomly, never any 'symptoms'. This last time that it did it, I was playing Age of Empires 3 and had just completed a level. What a pain in the ass!

Is it possible that it may be overheating? I can't imagine, its down at floor level in the basement and the air temp down here is 63 degrees. Also, its an E-Machines...

is the noise like the same kinda beep noise that you get when you turn on the computer??
there is a beep code on almost all computers that is a diagnostic beep code and it is telling you what is wrong...
if a computer is shutting down on you when you are in game only my 15 years of experience with building/fixing computers tells me that it is one of two things:
1) your video card is shitting the bed and causing your computer to reboot and when it comes back up you are getting a beep code because it does not see the video card until you unplug/reboot (bios beep code may be saying that "i don't see a video card")
2) your computer is overheating... take the side cover off and put a housefan blowing in the computer then start your game.. if it does not crash again then you know for sure it was heat....

The noise it was making wasn't any kind of beep, rather a Tone. Like I said, it makes a nee-nerr nee-nerr kind of noise (similar to a foreign police car/ambulance type of siren sound). As far as overheating goes, I really don't know. It's only done this 2 or 3 times, never close together and never while doing the same thing. I think being in the game was just a coincidence. I've been playing the same game now since it happened every night and nothing has happened since.

If it shuts down randomly like that, it is most likely overheating. If the noise is not constant, then most likely it wouldn't be your power supply. Either way, I would open it up, clean out all the fans and power supply for one, I'm sure they're filled with dust so it would be good to do it anyway...
Your CPU might be overheating also, maybe take off the cpu fan and make sure you have some thermal compound there..
So my guess is it's either a faulty power supply that needs to be replaced, or your CPU is overheating.
