    Sub Hook Up?

ok so ive had 2 8" subs sitting in my closet that i got for free back in like july. i was thinknig about selling them for a few bucks. but my friend had the great idea of hooking them up to my computer's speakers.

well we have no idea how to do that or if it could even be done.

i have two regular speakers already but could i possibly splice the two wires and run speaker wires to the subs? or would need an amp?

    any ideas? lol

I have 18 Sub Woofers hooked up to my laptop right now. Big ass ball of spliced shit wrapped in aluminum foil and duct tape.

    You'll need an amp.

If by "regular speakers" you mean small computer speakers connected with only a single 3.5mm, then there is no way that they would be able to handle car audio subs spliced into their cables.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible to use them if you want to. It's just a bit more involved than simply getting a new cable.

In high school a friend of mine was using a car audio sub as an amp for his bass guitar. It sounded terrible because he made a shitty plywood box for it (The construction and the volume (area) of the speaker housing is important for good sound quality/acoustics), but it goes to show you can use them for this sort of application.

one thing i learned the hard way is to make sure the ohms on the speakers will match whatever you are pushing them with....one thing is for sure, a computer itself wont do any good for these...you can, however, run the computer output to a reciever and play through that, and use it to power the subs.

like any ol stereo reciever, surround sound, whatever.....something that has an input and some decent wattage....what kinda subs are these that you are wanting to use? i used to do this kinda crap all the time just for fun....hell, i even spliced a cd player output into the needle wires on a record player.....worked just fine.

3.5mm jack to RCA adapter- plug in to receiver(for mids/highs) (cd or aux inputs) and viola you now have an amp. if the receiver has a sub out (most of the time a single RCA out) you get another receiver(for subs) and a Y style RCA cable and hook that to the cd or aux inputs and viola you now have amplified speakers and an amplified sub.

FYI you never want to send a subwoofer full signal just like you would never want to send a tweeter bass..

well you may wanna take a sub out of the box and see what it says on the back....then we can determine the proper ohms rating....thats very important....the wrong ohms can burn out a channel on the reciever...
