    Ed,
Do you have your server setup to do remote control from outside your network if so do you have any problems with the security end of things?

    well.............................................. ...................

I copied this right from Wikipedia

In computing, a file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a location for the shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, et cetera) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the computer network. The term server highlights the role of the machine in the client-server scheme, where the clients are the workstations using the storage. A file server is usually not performing any calculations, and does not run any programs on behalf of the clients. It is designed primarily to enable the rapid storage and retrieval of data where the heavy computation is provided by the workstations.

So basically its a computer that is always on you almost never use it directly but in directly it is used the most.
My server I have the following:
    over 90 Gigs of music
    300 gigs of movies
    50 gigs of pictures
lots and lots of word/how to documents

    I hope that helped

if you get a decent firewall you can VPN to your house (i have cisco pix, 100-200 on ebay) or you can open remote desktop in your linksys/etc so you can remote desktop from the outside.

that is what I do now but I thought about buying software and everyone is pointing to cisco.

I have been mainly a hardware guy as far as computers go but as of recently b/c of work i have to learn software too.

I run ISA just to allow certain users to certain sites. I don't use the FW feature. The Cisco ASA does all that.

if you want to get it setup and forget about it, you may need to find someone local to help ya out, if your interested in learning from the ground up, you should start with some A+ books. google A+ certification
