I am switching from DSL to cable for my internet service, do I need to get their modem ($50) or can I buy one from like Best Buy that will be cheaper and work just the same ?

Yes, you need a cable modem whether it came from BB or it's thier own

depends on the service. here we have to use the modem that the cable company gives us but they don't charge us for it.
