    HP Pavilion Won't Turn On

I have a one of those cheap ass hp pavilion notebooks. It's about one and half years old. It's been a great computer for 600 bucks, but now it wont turn on. I never leave it plugged in so I'm pretty sure there wasn't a power surge. My roomate has the same computer, so I swapped the battery and that didnt fix it. I stopped at Best Buy and talked to geek squad. They said it was probably the power supply (dont know if this is the right term) and would cost a couple hundred to fix. So could this be a simple fix I could do myself or is it time to junk it and move on to a better laptop? I know a little about computers but not much, whats your guys thoughts?

When you say "won't turn on" are you saying that when you push the On button nothing happens, or do the fans and everything kick on but it just doesn't boot up?

Sounds to me like the power supply took a dump and in a notebook, you'd be better off just buying a new one rather then getting that one fixed.

power supply isn't all that expensive... if you're worried about your stuff just unscrew the bastage and remove the HD... you should be able to plug it to another pc to extract or take it to some where like "geek squad" and have them put the shit on to a storage disk or key thingy...

Keep in mind, we're talking notebooks here, not desktops.

I'm saying difficulty and cost could be an issue. The parts in a notebook are generally more expensive to buy and replace. You need to check the AC adapter too if you've tried with a different battery.

If you want to get your data off the hard drive, computer supply stores such as microcenter sell adapters that let you hook up a Harddrive (regular, laptop, or SATA) to a USB port on another computer, like this one: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0288075

They work very well and are pretty cheap.

yeah, so even if i could find a power supply(if thats even whats wrong) it would be a pain in the ass to change? . . . yeah i will try a different ac adapter. . . i just figured that wouldnt be it if i put a different charged battery in it and didnt work; but who knows.

Rule out the adapter thing first and go from there.

Well, the problem could only be one of 2 things... the power supply, or the motherboard... and in a laptop, neither of these are really cost effective to replace... you are better off pulling the HD out and getting a new laptop

Well, Best Buy has a crappy Toshiba notebook listed "for sale" on their website (for in store pickup only) for $429.00 so you can either spend 3/4 of that getting the old one fixed or buy a new one....
