Hooking up video game system to monitor?
My brother wants to know if its possible and if so how can he hook his Xbox 360 to use his (has a desktop) computer monitor? Its a lcd monitor I believe.
I'd like to know the same but if it would be possible for a regular xbox & ps2 to my laptop?
Thanks for looking.

This should go in the computer section BTW....
The short answer is, prolly not. The vast majority of monitors do not have inputs that a 360 uses (RCA or composite), however if its a new 360 with the HDMI output, alot of new LCDs have HDMI inputs now...
Or he could look for a VGA adaptor for this 360(I dont know if they make these or not)...
But like I said, long story short, prolly not, but he might get lucky.

if his lcd monitor is a VGA input monitor he can do it all he needs is to buy the wires which cost around 30 bucks they go straight from 360 to monitor and get a 2 to 1 splitter from frys its only 6 bucks

VGA is a blue or green port that the monitor cable goes into and has lots of prongs and has a huge square end and a hdmi looks like a usb cable

Thats what I was going to to post, yeah he has a cord that goes from the processor to the monitor that is square and blue and plugs in (has two screws on the side to secure it in). So a vga adapter just spilts it to where the one from the computer plugs in and (have to get a cord for the x-box?) plugs into the second part? Where would we buy something like this?
So if I got a a/v to s-video cord I could hook up my ps2/xbox then? Also my laptop has a port that is like the one on my brothers monitor...?
Edit to add: To make it more complicated he wants to know if there is some attachment he can get to plug his cable tv cord into his computer. He basically wants to use his computer to play xbox 360 and watch tv as his tv now sucks instead of buying a new tv.Last edited by Firebird Phoenix; 12-15-2008 at 12:03 AM.

they sell an hdmi cable that transfers to the cable for a computer moniter. I just went and picked up an hdmi cable for my lap top to plug into my tv, and while i was there i saw some cables to hook a regular computer screen (not equipped with hdmi) to an hdmi input

For watching cable on his computer he'll need a video card that has an input -or- he'll need to pony up the cash for a monitor with multiple inputs as well as a cable box with DVI or HDMI output. [Edit] There are some external adapters/hardware that make use of a USB input, so he could probably go that route.
For playing the 360 on the monitor, he'll need this. It will work best if he has a monitor that has dual inputs (DVI and VGA, or some combination of DVI, VGA, HDMI, and VGA).
I have the FHD2400 Gateway monitor, and have my computer and 360 hooked up to it using the HDMI (computer) and component (360). I used to use a LG 19" widescreen that I used the DVI (computer) and VGA (360).
He'll suffer some video quality loss if using the VGA adapter however.
There's also the issue of audio.Last edited by Tide; 12-15-2008 at 08:12 AM.
