I've had decent luck with both manufactures. Currently I use a Seagate and It's been very solid.

I would go for the top one because of the 7200rpm and 16mb cache.

Check best buy, usually on weekends they have them for around $100 for 500gb and you can get a 1 TB for $175. I have two 1TB and love them!

I have two of these set up on RAID (everything is saved to both so if one fails I don't loose anything)

the passport is for portability ...get the top one..the 7200 speed is well worth it..and the 16mb cache is nice also.

Like others already mentioned, out of these three choices I'd recommend the first one b/c of the 7200 RPM & 16 MB...

If you are going to be using this external hard drive primarily for a laptop, though, I'd say go with the WD Passport...

I have worked in the IT/IS industry for almost 15 years. Seagate's have always had issues. Even back to when a 20 meg harddrive was consider a big drive. Worked at Compusa (yeah, yeah) as the Tech manager. We were always having to return Seagates. Where I currently work we buy Dell only for now. In the last year we have repalced 400 + hard drives all Seagte's. They first sent us a differnt model Seagate but started getting failed drives from that model also. We then asked Dell to send us Western Digitail's and have not had a failed drive since once replaced. We lease about 3000 PC's and replace about 1400 PC's a year to end of lease. I have never replaced that many hard drives until we switched to Dell about 2 years ago. We had always been Compaq before (business models). I have always been a Maxtor fan but Western Digital bought them. All the Maxtor drives I have bought over the years all the way back to a 100 meg one still work. I have yet to have one fail. But do and have seen hard drives fail right and left. Sorry about teh epic novel. Just personal experince with what I do for a living. If you asked me about Plasma TV's I could not tell you anything lololol.
