Rebuilding Question
I have a 96 T/A and Last Saturday I was running it pretty hard (132 MPH) and I noticed that the Oil pressure dropped and when I slowed down I heard the dreaded Knock. My question is would I be better off rebuilding the car back stock or doing a 383 upgrade. I know by doing the upgrade it will consist of a new rotating assembly and having the heads ported/polished, installation of headers and a new cam, lifters, valves, and push rod guide plates... By saying this how many other changes will be needed for the motor to operate efficiently. Reason I am debating the question is that I don't want a nightmare a ruin a good car. I still want the dependability of what I had prior to this.Any Help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say go for the 383 stroker kit. If you're going to tear it all down, why not build it bigger and stronger anyway. More cubes is a plus.

Try to go as big as you can possibly afford.
There are also a number of shops that will sell the short block all ready done to different levels.

Often times when you add up the cost of all the parts and the machining, etc it turns out that purchasing a built short block is the better and cheaper way to go.
Plus these guys will back their respective engines.

GM High Tech Performance magazine did a series of articles called "My First Stroker". They went through and did a budget build of an LS1 383 stroker, as someone from home would do it. It was an interesting article. Then they compared the cost of all their parts to buying a 383 motor from another company. Check out www.gmhightechperformance.com for the articles.
They went through assembly stages, to figuring compression ratios, through the tools and parts needed. It was some good shit. I think that would be a decent place to start. Lunati and Eagle both make stroker kits for the LS1/LT1 to take the guess work out of it. Good luck.

GM High Tech Magazine also did an article on a 396ci LT1 built by Golen. You could check that out too for ideas.
