Sebring Silver Metalic- 2002 Camaro Z28
Loose Steering Column, Help
I noticed when I bought my 99 Z28 the steer wheel column was a little loose. Well I say loose because I don't know how to discribe it. It kind of wobbles down and up a tad. It is almost as if a gorilla was using the steering wheel when getting in and out of the car.
I heard it could be the bolts that hold it in, four i think. Is this common, provided you're always yanking on it to get in and out?
A local shop sad it is preventing them from getting a true center steering wheel alignment. They said its becuase of the play up and down. Something about when you step on the break it goes up and centers. When you let off the break i guess it must slip down a tad and goes left. Just trying to reitterate what they tech said.
They said it could be bad beerings? They said they have no clue until they take the whole thing apart. suggested buying the unit from a u-pull-it yard cuz i could end up in the 800-900-1000 dollar range by the time they are done figuring it out. Ugh. The up and down doesn't bother me, cuz i don't hang on the wheel. The left of center in the steering wheel is what bothers me.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

some of the older 70's and 80's cars had that problem. the bolts would come loose and the steering wheel would move up and down. It required pulling it apart and tightening the bolts, with loctite added. The problem was then solved. I had a car that did this but never noticed the pull to the right or left.

It doesn't pull to the left, the wheel just points a little off center to the left. For the most part she drives straight as an arrow.
Thanks for the info. Since I came across a firebird with the same problem, much worse. I thought it might be common and have a common fix.

Get a Haynes manual. Has step by step instructions with pics to get to the bolt, bolts that get loose. You'll need a steering wheel puller and another puller, can't remember off the top of my head the name of the othe uller. Mine moves down and to he left about 1/4 inch. Just had the frontend aligned and they said notta. If mine get worse than I will have to deal with it.

ok, I have the haynes, didn't look though. If it is the four bolts, e.g. common fix to this problem, then great. I'll check my Hanyes, and not for streaks. I have a steering wheel puller, kind of universal i think. I used it back when i had a 67 Firebird. That was the first and only wheel i ever pulled. I was impressed how easy it was. Air bags, um makes me nervous as hell. I guess the important part is to disconnect the batter first, and read the manual.
thanks
