Are component tv connections considered high def?

I had posted another thread about getting an LCD tv for video games but instead of spending a bunch on LCD couldnt i just get a basic tube television with component inputs to get a high def picture?

Not sure if components are considered high def or not, but after checking my Plasma pic differance between components and the HDMI... HDMI>components on the high def channels

You mean composite inputs on a non-hd tv? Nope.

Component Video connections can carry a hi-def signal IF you have an HD tv... If you just have a standard def tv then the component video connection just gives you the best picture possible for THAT tv.

On an HD tv the component video cables are the MINIMUM requirement to get an HD picture. DVI or HDMI are better. HDMI carries Digital video AND audio, where as the DVI can only carry Digital video.

Composite video is an analog connection (yellow, white, red) that is one step above coax cable.

S-video is a step above Composite.

    From worst to best:
Coax (like an Antenna or Cable)
    Composite (yellow, white, red)
S-Video (replaces the yellow) (better seperation of colors from black and white)
Component Video (Seperation of Chrominance and Luminance and higher bandwidth)
    DVI (digital Video)
    HDMI (digital video and audio)
