    musty smell from A/c

2002 Camaro, when first starting car or turning A/C on musty smell for about a minute or so, after that not noticed. Would some dain hose be plugged and water lying somewhere in the system causing it. Anyone with simuliar problem or ideas?

I get this question all the time at work. ( I run a Goodyear Service shop). There is a drain pan under your A/C Evaporator ( dash unit ) that catches the condesation from your A/C & Heater core. Bacteria will build up on/in this tray, especially if one of the drain passages gets a little plugged. Short of pulling the dash or physically cleaning the catch tray. There is a chemical we use at work to *clean* the tray. It will kill the bacteria and get rid of the odor fairly cheap and quickly. Most NAPA's etc will have it. I forget the name, it's usually in the TEMP product line at NAPA. There's an air freshener that you can use to, comes in an aerosol can. Ozium or something VERY close to that ( sound of the name ). Turn the car on, Turn the A/C to Max and shut the car off. Then spray into all the vents (ALOT). I recommend having the windows down as well and not breathing more of this crap than you have too. LET IT SIT. Couple hours. Repeat Next day if odor persists. It will go away in a couple treatments. Or.. Yank the drain tray, clean it GOOD. Find the stopped drain ( usually a few pine needles worked their way in and clogged the little run-out passages, or something similar ). I sell this service at work for (depending on the car ) 200-500 dollars. Got 1200 once from an E500 Mercedes owner. Go figure. LoL but it was 9.6 HOURS to R&R that dash.

right behind the glove box is the heater core and a/c area, pull the cover off and do what this guy said, some simple green and a small brush will do the trick as well, basically its clogged like you thought it was

As air comes into the cabin from outside the car, which does it hit first - the AC evaporator or the heater core? I'm wondering which I should try to clean first... seems like the upstream item will have more dirt/fuzz etc needing cleaned off....

I did some more research and it's clear, the incoming air goes thru the evaporator first, then the heater core if the hot/cold door is set to allow air thru it. Guess that makes sense - should have known

Almost all old cars have a musty, mold infected AC system.

Here's some stuff that you can spray into the vents:
