Coolant system needs a little help. 98k miles

Well the water in the tank was brown! So i drained it last night put a bottle of radiator flush and gonna drive it like that for a few days. And then i was going to get some red line water wetter or that purple ice stuff along with some red antifreeze and distilled water. Any other suggestions? Whats the best way to clean the overflow bottle out? TIA

dont use the red or pink antifreeze flush it real good and put green in it

If your car originally came with dexcool (orange/pink coolant) then stay with it. If it came with green coolant, stay with that.

If you mix it at all with green coolant it will.

agreed, you mix glycol (green) with dexcool (pink gm) and your in for a shitload of trouble, we tryed to convert my Moms blazer when she got it and it had cooling problems eversince...didnt fix it till i switched it back to dex

as of now the only thing in the system is water and a bottle of radiator flush. I should be okay switching to the green?! If not i need to know cause I am doing it tonight before our freeze is suppose to hit tomorrow. Plan was to turn the car on open the drain and put a hose in the radiator and run fresh water in it with the heater on while new water runs through the system and drains out. Then i was going to overfill the the overfill bottle for a while to run everything out of it then siphon it dry and add some green to it. I figured 1 whole bottle of green and the rest distilled water with a bottle of water wetter and a bottle of radiator/waterpump conditioner by preston.

Id say stick with pink, its just as good trust me, ittl save you problems in the long run

TOO LATE. I switched it to the preston green but THE BOTTLE SAYS IT WOULD MIX WITH ANY COLOR.

Coolant system flush at any reputable shop or dealer is the way to go. $100 bucks and they totally flush the entire system and replace with fresh DexCool.....pressure check and your golden. Most DexCool issues have been the cause of leaky pressure systems or mixing with other "color" coolants. Never too late to do the right thing

Yes even though it says it will mix it is still a big no-no.

Hopefully a flush will clean everything out!

Well i think i am going to stick with the green. Everyone I talked to says go green and my best friedn which is a well qualified mechanic and trans am lover. I have already done the swap and flush and so fourth. I am not worried about weither there was red in the system i know thats not the case. the whole system has been filled and drained twice with just water and the third time was water and a bottle of flush and drove 150 miles. Then we started the car up turned the heater on and open the drain on the radiator and added water as it drained out for 15 minutes. The we put a gallon of green in with a bottle of preston coolant treatment and the rest water. I will do it again in the spring since the system was pretty abused.

A good flush and a fresh bottle with some H2O sounds good. I don't think one brand is particularly better than the other.

are you going to get premixed or mix yourself? if you are mixing yourself be sure to get distiled water so you dont get rusty again.

yeah i didn't have enough time to get it(distilled water). I am going to flush again in the spring.

Well maybe in a couple weeks. I guess i am going to have to buy like 10 gallons of distilled water to get all of the other water out.

uhhh. Dont worry. Distilled water is by no means necessary. Your cooling system will not need to be flushed again... rust will not pile up and eat through the engine and subsequently the entire car, and anything within a 50 foot radius made of steel. All you'll need to do is put a small bottle of additive in with a rust preventer and you'll be fine.
