MAF screen
just poking around on here i have seen some aftermarket MAF sensors and some other web sites that talk about removing the screen on a stock MAF sensor to improve airflow. have any of you done it? is to pretty easy to do? any noticible gains? and would you recommend me doing it. its on a car that gets driven on weekends when its nice out.

Minimal & Trash Issues
I torn my screen when removing for port and polish. I have had the screen off for approximately 2K miles with no ill effects. If I had not torn it would have left it in place. Suppose to be some gains ( I've read) but only minimal over stock. Stock is suppose to be sufficent for around 500HP.

You wont really feel any gains and u might not even see them on a dyno but it helps a lil bit. Depending on how you drive or where it might be wise too leave it in. The corvettes dont even come with them and there only purpose is too straighten out the air coming in. Doesnt really do anything on a F-body when your intake is straight. On a truck with bent elbows and offset intake tubes it works. They just pop out.

The screen creates laminar flow accross the maf sensor, some say it helps some say it hurts. Usually it hurts more than helps, the restriction in minimal and now worth messing with.

Some run into problems removing it - I'd leave it alone.

I've had mine off for about 20k miles and over 2 years and no problems. I don't know if it helped at all, but it didn't hurt anything either. This is the 4th car of mine that I ripped it out of.

You guys have no idea about laminar flow. The screens disrupt whatever laminar flow there might have been and create turbulent flow. Simply look at a faucet with & w/o a screen and you will see what I mean. The shiny flow that you see from a screenless faucet is laminar flow. Put the screen tip on and you see rough (turbulent) flow.
The only problem with going w/o screens is that the MAF table has been constructed by GM for screened MAFs. When I removed my screen from my stock GM MAF, it resulted in a high RPM lean condition, which can easily be taken care of with the inexpensive hand held tuners. And some cars will never have an issue. If you hear pinging, then add fuel.'99 Camaro SS; 6-spd, LS2 402 stroker short block, PP stage 3 heads, GMS MAF, 244/248 cam, FLP headers, Borla catback, 4.10 gears, LS6 intake, 39#/hr injectors, Pro 5.0 shifter, subframe connectors, Comp Cams 1.85 rr,
Best ET: 12.23sec (2.000sec 60'), trap spd:117.5mph, with the LS1 engine.

I tried a descreened MAF for a week. I kept getting a transmission code(can't remember exactly which one). My car is an A4. I put the screened one back in and everything worked fine again. So who knows what it wil do.
