I think Hendrix would be the obvious answer.

    Mexican killed my car

That's a hard one. I don't know if there really is a "best".

My favorite i think is "White Room" by Cream (clapton)

I just love the way the guitar takes over the song. It's what got me playing guitar back in high school.

Some other of my favorites are:

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
    Eric Clapton - Bad Love
    Santana - Oye Como Va
RATM - Killing in the Name
    Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Guns and Roses - November Rain
    Chuck Berry - Maybellene
BB King - The Thrill Is Gone
    Ventures - Walk Don't Run

Buckethead kills all, just go to youtube and find some of his stuff , i never understood why hendrix always tops peoples lists, i mean he was good for his time but against people like satriani, marty friedman, or kirk hammet he gets destroyed

listen to "through the fire and flames" from DragonForce, crazy solos in that one

I have a lot of respect for Hendrix and the old school guitar players for making music the way it is now. Just not my thing.
Hendrix started a new way of playing. He was 'sloppy' but it hadn't been done before. From what I understand, it is very easy to play what he played.

please, without Hendrix there would be no buckethead, satch, vai, etc. his playing might have sloppy at times, but his innovation and style was lightyears ahead of everyone.

Hell I'd always thought of Trower as the re-incarnation of Hendrix.

To me....a solo has to say something musically....not so much ripping or slashing....more of the play on the strings & presentation....like the way the musician makes the music "speak" to the audience & the way he interacts with the guitar.
I feel the same about drum solos too.

I've played electric guitar since I was eight, into all the great guitar soloists.

There is one that stands out, he is a genius.
