What makes this happen???

I bought my 99 z28 about a year and a half ago, bone stock. I have done no mods to electric whatso ever. Why would my front turn signals keep melting/exploding? The first set went so bad they melted clean through the housing, and then I replaced them with black housings. My signals stopped working this week, and when I crack the car open to change em, this is what I found:

One of mine was melted. Who ever installed the bulb did it incorrectly. After it melted I was never able to position it correctly again, so it continued to melt and blew. It is very hard to see and get to. Did you yank the headlight assembly? That's what I'm going to do. But I have to replace the housing anyway. What a pain!

Mine did the same thing, but I totaled the car before I had a chance to figure it out.

Yanking the headlight housing is no big deal. 2 minutes you'll have that out. Pulling the turn signal housings, now thats another story.

Oh and check for moisture! I had to drill a small hole in bottom of my tail lights to allow moisture to evaporate out of housing.

I will be drilling small holes in the new set of turn signal housings I now have to get, just in case. But the ones I got have drainage holes in them, yet water built up anyway......dammit.

Mine definnitly had moisture in them and melted the plastic and broke the bulbs

The moisture will make them blow out like that. And if they are not seated correctly in comes H20! I think that's the culprit, not an electrical problem.

I have replaced mine many many times. my bulb housings looked burnt just like yours do. so, this winter i pulled the front bumper and replaced both turn signal housings with euro's, and also replaced both the bulb housings with napa replacements. the connections were easy, just cut and splice the new ones in. make sure that your new housings and connectors have a good seal to prevent moisture from entering the turn signal housing.
also try some dielectric gel before putting the bulb into the connector.

The housings crack easily...and let in moisture.
Over time they will rust the socket out.

Remove your positive battery terminal. Replace your sockets and bulb. They are not designed to last forever.....

K, cool. Thanks for all the help. I was just worried I had a voltage issue. Electrical scares me. Alot.
