    Clutch question/problem?

I have a 98 TA WS6 that I recently had a new clutch put in. This was everything, clutch, flywheel, master and slave etc. It was an arm and a leg! My mechanic put in OEM parts.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. When I picked the car up, I engaged reverse and let the clutch out as normal. The car "shook" almost like it was about to die as the clutch was dis-engaged. I repeated and got the same result. I went back inside and asked the mechanic to take a look. He verified what I was experiencing and told me that it would be o.k. as everying was still new and would be fine once broken in. I told him that when the car was brand new, so was the clutch and it never did this before. He assured me that it would be ok and if not bring it back in 30 days. Are these clutch's adjustable? What could be the problem? Same outcome experienced in 1st gear also.

    2. My cruise doesnt work anymore after getting the new clutch. Could they have forgotten to "hook" something up? Im not as savvy as others on the board with car repairs so I figured Id ask here first before I went in and accused of not connecting something and him laughing at me!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

Part 1: give it about 500 miles and it'll be fine. You gotta think man-a clutch is metal on metal and if it's 100% new material, then it's gonna buck around a bit.

Part 2: i'm sure that was something they did. I hate when mechanics fuck up...really irritates me.

    1. I realize it is metal on metal (or sort of), but my question is why did it not do it when the car was new also? This is the part I cant figure out. Ive already put about 300 miles on it since, and still no better? Is it really going to get better in another 200 miles?

I really dont want to get outside of my 30 day warranty on workmanship.

It was a small custom automotive and fabrication shop. He has done repairs for me for years and owns a race stock car and drag team. He builds all of their cars. I dont think knowledge is an issue, but was wondering if he missed something.

The flywheel or clutch plate could be warped or just faulty from the factory. It should feel the same as it was new to you, smooth and firm. If it was all aftermarket stuff i would be inclided to say different.

Go back and talk to him. You are the customer, he should be willing to talk to you. A new clutch can be a little jerky at first, but yeah 300 miles later it should be pretty broke in by then, unless it is all highway miles. And just address to him, do not accuse mechanics hate that for some reason , but let him know that your cruise does not work. He may have just brain farted when he did the job and forgot something. Not sure what he would have disconnected.

Or another option, talk to another mechanic about it and see what he thinks. Personally I would just go back to the original mechanic.

hope it all works out for you though.

here's a thought: see what happens when you drop the hammer at 6500 rpms...should smooth everything out

    ok, no..don't do that.

so you let out the clutch without giving it gas? did you do it slowly and on a flat surface? if so it wouldnt be jerking like you describe, but like everyone said, its a brand new clutch. you can always talk to the mechanic though and just ask him to walk you through what all was done. this way you know what was done and it re caps the whole process for him as well so he can make sure he did everything he said.

and heres another thought, the person you bought it from may have lied to you about replacing the clutch, or that may have been all he replaced, you can just replace the clutch and not the flywheel, throw out and pilot bearing
so yes it might just need to be broke in more, but again check where u got it from

Every time I've fried a clutch in my foxbody Thunderbird and gotten a new one it's always behaved like that for me for a while until broken in. They aren't hydraulic though.. but anyway. It will probably feel fine after the break in period. I hate the new clutch feeling though!
