After-market speakers might handle a little more abuse than the stock speakers but will still be at risk of being damaged eventually. The way I look at is this. If high quality sound is important to you then replace the entire stock system. Just upgrading portions of it just doesn't cut it in my book.
If you can't afford to do it all at once start with a HU and new door speakers. Next add an amp and subwoofer. Or if you'd rather not go the subwoofer route get another set of speakers for the B-pillars and a 4 channel amp to run all 4 speakers. The hatch area speakers are not needed. I don't use ANY rear speakers at all in my car. Even so, when people hear my setup for the first time they swear there are speakers behind them.

white rascal is kinda the extreme end of what to do. I think with proper wiring and a set of decent speakers [keeping in mind that the b-pillars and the 6.5's in the front are 2ohm, everything else is 4 ohm] will do fine. I will infact have more to say about this in about a month or more when I finish upgrading my stock speakers. I just want to see how much capability the stock system has.
Rascal knows his shit for sure and if you want to rip out everything, GO FOR IT as i'm sure it will perform better. I personally like the interface of the stock HU and want to keep the interior looking like it did rolling off the show room.

you to are just way to cute...
Anyways third shift is right its not needed however I agree with white rascal somewhat. I would replace everything. After market amps, speakers, and crossover will give you much more superior sound

it's like anything. you can upgrade the car anyway you want, what are your goals? superior sound, or just a bump up in quality?

well to answer the original question.. if all you are looking to do is swap speakers because you have a blown one or whatever the case may be. Then No the stock headunit should NOT blow most aftermarket speakers. just make sure you match them properly. The sound quality may not be any better than stock though since you are giving the speakers the same input as stock. ie distortion from cheap crossovers...

Just to update what i originally said: I have installed a set of Kenwood 5x7's in the hatch. and they sound WAY better than stock. The highs are much clearer and the mid is very solid. Very pleased thus far with my set up:
stock H/U, monsoon amp and wireing
front: TBA
sails: Elemental Designs 6.5" eu700s
hatch: kenwood 5x7 KFC-C5780ieLast edited by third_shift|studios; 01-02-2007 at 06:48 AM.
