header gaskets

i am installing my pacesetter LT tomorrow, i was wondering if i should use the gaskets that came with them, or get some better ones

Get better ones, factory OEM replacements to be exact. The ones that come with the Pacesetters are a waste of time.

i checked all the gm dealers in town none of them had the gaskets in stock, so i used fel-pro gaskets

Order some GM gaskets now. By the time they arrive those Fel-pros will be blown out.

do you suggest getting oem replacements rather then using the ones that come with the hooker headers as well? It sounds like I have a leak... I wasn't sure if it was the headers or somewhere in my y pipe or what....

Absolutely! The GM MLS header gaskets work better than any other gasket available. If a bolt were to break or back out and created a leak, most other gaskets would blow out. The GM gasket cannot blow out. Just replace/retorque the bolt and it will seal. They also leave no residue behind to scrape off.

Everyone here including myself just reused the stock metal ones that were on the car.. no probs yet..

I had my headers and all installed.. so would it be a lot of work for me to do it myself? (changing the gaskets?) Also does anyone have the part number for the gaskets? Earlier I spoke of the sound of a leak...could it possibly be a gasket that's blown or any other ideas? It really sounds like it comes from around the shifter area, not around the headers. I couln't locate it myself.

I've done 7 car's headers.. not hard.. just takes some time.. and helps with another set of hands and a 10mm gear wrench.

I called the dealer and he told me the part # was changed to 12617944 and they were $14.94 each. Is that a good deal? I sure hope the leak I hear is the crappy gaskets that Hooker sent with the headers.

Buy the Percy's dead soft aluminum as those are the best gaskets on the market for the LSx motors.

I'll second that,,,,,no reason to order new ones unless you want an extra set laying around for insurance. Just reuse the stockers that come off the car. They can be removed and reused countless times.

Well I had the shop that did the install because I "thought" they were better but now I know that they are not. He told me they had a little problem getting them off so thats y I told him to use the hooker ones.

Ooops,,,I guess they got destroyed beyond repair??? Well I guess in that case you do what you have to. I know waiting sometimes for parts to come in can be a pain. I would order a set from GM anyway so you have them coming. Chances are you might be swapping them in there sometime in the future,,,,or if the car comes apart again for some other reason....they would be good to have around.
