Tire Shredding

Anybody seen recent news reports on front tires being shredded on 2004 - 06GTO's? There's a news hawk reporting on an incident out of the Cleveland area. Additionally there are supposed to be several complaints filed with the transportation board on the same subject. Another GOT owner I know at work was going to the dealership last night to see what they had to say. A similiar report was run on the local news in Detroit.

Been goin on since 04. Strut rub. Cars were designed for 235's and Pontiac put 245's on em. Seems the 06's have even more. I dunno...Pontiac fully warrantied mine. Replace the tires and realigned with more positive camber. No more strut rub for me.

christ my SS has 310 or so RWHP on 275's and it hooks excellent from a roll

Just read about that. Got curious, since mine recently underwent the recall fix. Went out side, checked my tires, and sure enough: steel wires showing on the inside.

Needless to say, I am PISSED.

Whats the fix most dealers are giving? Nothing?

Print off the TSB....take it to the dealer....most reputable dealers are replacing the tires with 235's and putting a couple of degrees of positive camber all under warranty........my car drove and handles much better after Pontiac did their thing....no rub at all.....I'll look up the TSB for you man and post it here in a minute....

From the National Safety folks...this has already been filed and a class action lawsuit is pending on Pontiacs/GM's actions to correct...anyway this is what it says...

"History: The 2004-2005 Pontiac GTO is an imported version of the Australia Holden Monaro. The Holden Manaro comes from the factory with 235/45R17 tires, tires that are generally 235mm (9.25") wide. However, when Pontiac spec'd the GTO for the US, they finally decided on a 10mm wider tire, a 245/45R17 BF Goodrich G-Force KDWS tire. No changes were made to the suspension of the vehicle for US import though.

Current Problem: The larger tire causes rubbing on the front strut, namely and more commonly the passenger side strut. This is evidenced by a rubbing mark on thestrut body and many times wear marks on the tires themselves. In some cases, front suspension binding has occurred. In other cases, tire replacement was necessary. This is due, in fact, to the increase in size of the tire that Pontiac has chosen to put on the imported version. Several Pontiac dealerships are aware of this problem, and it has been speculated that Pontiac is aware as well.

Future Problems: Tires are not all the same size. One 245/45R17 tire can be smaller or larger depending on the manufacturer of the tire. There is a strong posibility that when a consumer replaces his/her worn factory tires with another set of tires, of the same "size", that they would be even larger and could cause serious problems.

GM does not have a TSB published as I origanlly thought...but does have tons of info and many many documented warranty repairs have been done. Take this all to your dealer and let us know...

Well, the local dealer is replacing the tires, and at my request, going over the front suspension completely and following Pontiac's lead on this.

Ought to be interesting. If the problem is the tire width, which is what it seems to be to me (along with the strut/bushing issue), the smart thing to do would be to put the 235's on it, rather than 245's. That is of course, provided that the fix for the bushing/strut issue actually works.
