Pewter- 2000 Camaro SS
Cam help?!
I have a 00 SS, and i'm looking to buy a cam for it but dont know which one to choose. I want to be able to hear the difference, i'm not neccesarily looking for high hp gains just wanna be able to hear the difference from stock. I have no mods done to the car yet. Also, i know it is not recommended but is it possible to install a cam without changing the springs and seats to save a couple hundred bucks or is that not a good idea?

I ran the HotCam for a year with stock LS6 springs and stock push rods
but you do not have to have headers and catback it is recommended to get the most gains and for the drivability.
But you HAVE to change the stock LS1 springs (they suck bad!!)
and if you have and auto trans put a stall in there, the drivabilitywill be better.
I will say this take you time and doit right, get teh recommended stuff you will be happier in the long run!!Mike Berry

yea get a bigger cam than the 224. with the tuning ability today you can go bigger and still daily drive
my 238/242 cam in my TA could be driven everyday and I get 17mpg in town and 25mpg on the highway and thats with 3.73's and a 3800 Vigilante
If I where you I would look at somthing with a 230ish duration and .580ish lift on a 112lsa. that way you can use comp 918's

I've read good things on the 228R cam. I have half a mind to get that one myself. It appeals to me because you don't have to spin the motor hard to get decent numbers. I think that one peaks ~6300 rpm. There are definitely bigger cams out there but that one almost suites my needs. I'm looking for a nice low-mid range cam because most of the runs I ever do on the street are ran down low usually.

Custom Slate Blue- 99 B4C
get a tight LSA if you want the cam sound. 114 or higher won't be as choppy as 111 or 112. Lower durations will be much mroe street friendly. I'd go something around 224 or 228 on a 112 for what you want. Bigger isn't always better

Duration and LSA are what give you the coppy sound, its called overlap
intake duration+exaust duration /4 -LSA x2= overlap
the more you have the thumpier it will be
stock is like -35* my cam is +20* the HotCam is -.5*
they say anything under 0* will be emmisions legal, I dont know about that but its what I have heard

Stick to a streetable cam for compatability!! 214 up to 220 in duration is good with around a .525 up to .560 is good for starters! You will have to change your springs however, stock ones are barely strong enough to handle even stock lifts. Any bigger cam than above and you will have to make other upgrades like converter, gear, etc. LS6 springs (yellow) can handle up to .580 lift and is what is in my Trans Am now with a 51011 SLP Cam and works well. Check out Parts 4 sale for springs, camshaft and spring compressor to maximize /stretch your dollar!
