1969 Z-28 vrs 2002 Mustang
I was checking out the Mustang siteont ask: and anyone here thinks a 2002 Mustang GT would beat a 1969 Z-28 with 456 gears? I had a Z with 456s and it would not even be close. I like most fast cars but some of those Mustang guys dont have a clue.

ha
dude the z28 woulda smoked him.... 2002 gt have roughly 260 hp and 300 lbs of torque, vs a 69 camaro z28s roughly 400 hp and torque stock, plus they both weigh relatively the same.... theres no way he could keep up, even if u had shitty gearing

69 z 28 with a stock 302 cubic inch was rated 290 at the crank so what fantsy book are you reading and btw i think it ran the quarter in low 14 seconds about the same as the gt and with 456's your top end would be about 110 tops so he would take you on the highway

Hugger orange- 69 Z/28
Having owned multiple newer Mustangs... 92 5.0, 97 Cobra and 03 Cobra and multiple 69 Z's in various stages of modification here's my .02 cents. The "stock" 69 Z is a stone. It got it's butt whooped on a regular basis back in the 60's. Now if you added headers, gears, through the crappy carb in the trash and put a properly jetted Holley 4779 750 carb on, it ran pretty repectfully (mine would run 12.80's all day long). Against a "stock" new Mustang the moded Camaro could probably take the win light as long as you did not goon a shift or bog it out of the hole. NOW, if you make those same tuning mods on the Mustang....headers, gears and induction.......don't bet your pink slip! The 1969 Z/28 is an icon of the 60's and one of my favorite cars of all time, but like many other stories and fables these cars have enjoyed some pretty tall tales about them.
Technology is undeniably the advantage here. If you would look at dyno sheets of both cars you would clearly see the Mustang makes more power across a much larger RPM band. That means the Camaro only has a possible advantage for a very short time, but is behind the curve most of the time. The new cars are like DC motors, they pull through the entire RPM band and under all throttle settings. The dyno runs only show one throttle position "wide open" Hands down the better power maker and power potential resides in the Mustang FI engine. Try and match the power of the new LS series engines with the durability, performance and economy. Friends......love the car for what it is, a true classic muscle car and let the fables be told. Just don't get caught at a stop light with your stock Z against one of the new power houses.

Compare a 350 HP 350 CID engine from the 60's to a LS1 350HP, no comparision LS1 gets the checkered flag. Don't get me wrong, the 302 CAN make power if it's properly equipped. Put a set of Phase 2 Bowtie heads and a #140 off road cam and that bad boy will talk to you. Just so's happen I did one like that with 4.10 gears and it ran great. Just had to drive it like you wanted to break it Bottom line, equally modified.... the the newer engine will infact out perform the old one. Now ask me which one I like better.....The Z of course!

I think a 1969 Z-28 302 would smoke a 2002 mustang gt. If the mustang had a few mods on it like headers, you might not win.

The 69 Z-28 came with a few different engines.
The DZ-302 was the one that ahd the torque and power, it probably would beat a stock 02 Stang, with the 456 in the 69.
However, the 350 in the 69 was weak.
Also, most of the 1st gens had power then that is not near the power we get today.
My 67 had a 327 in it, 210HP at the crank!!!!
Yes, the 1st gens look damn fine and where fast in those days, but unless they are mod'd, they cannot keep up today. No biggie, the style and rareness of them makes they so good now.

The only engine available on the 69 z-28 was the 302 with either one or two holleys. A 350 camaro was not a z-28 in 69. That happened in 70.

A 2002 Mustang GT will do 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and cover the 1/4 mile in about 14 flat. Whether a 69 Z28 can match those numbers or not, I don't know.
The 4.56 gears really turn the tables as well, so who would win is anyones guess.

Red- 1998 Z28 Camaro
the Z would win, hell ive race mustang GTs in a truck with 315 at the crank and beat them on the street 0-75ish they strat pulling me aftter that speed but like i say the Z would win and as for bashing the old motors you dont know what your talking about 396s for the most part had 350-375 at the crank and dont get me started on the 427, my dad had a nova with a 396 with the only mod being a carb, and and intake he ran 13.2s all day long

Back in the day, the problem was traction, not power production.

Gotta agree, the Stangs ran high to mid 14's same as the Camaro with the stock 3.73's. With the 4.56's the 69 would pull it.
